No. You have to set the controller down into the station to charge.

The difference between the play and charge vs. this kit is that the backs of the battery door have a cutout that exposes a charging connection (on the battery itself). This part of the battery sits directly on the charging station to charge the batteries. The play and charge is charged by the usb connection on the controller. I actually prefer the charging station because I seem to constantly have issues with the usb port on the xbox (from either the cable or the controller itself).
