“When the weight rack is folded closed and open, is there slight vertical play to allow you to pick up a side and swing it open and closed. Or, is there no play and it has to be dragged across the floor surface?”

Marsh This unit folds open and closed smoothly without play. The lower bracket is to be positioned 1 7/16 (4 cm) inches above the floor over the wall studs that are spaced 16-24 inches apart. This will give enough space that the rack will not drag across the floor surface. When installing, you will need a wall surface at least 8 feet high and 6 feet wide. The upper bracket would be positioned about 76 ⅜ inches (194 cm) above the floor. All assembly and installation instructions can be found in the user manual.
