Genesee7, there is not a fixed mileage cut-off where reception suddenly stops, because antenna “mileage” ratings are only general guidelines and actual results depend on the signal strength available at your exact location. Online signal ratings are typically measured outdoors at about 30 feet high with zero obstructions, so a UHF signal shown at 40 miles on a map may still come in fine in some homes, while in other homes it may be weakened by trees, hills, nearby buildings, metal siding or roofing, Low-E windows, steel framing, older plaster walls with metal mesh, or even room-to-room placement differences inside the same house. For the best chance of reliable UHF reception at that distance, place the antenna as high as possible near a window facing the broadcast towers, fully uncoil the cable, keep it away from Wi-Fi routers and large metal objects, and run a fresh channel scan every time you move it.
