Hi pesco. Thank you for reaching out regarding your Replacement Water Filter for Select Samsung Refrigerators; if you need to turn off the water supply before you change the filter and how often you need to change the water filter. Regarding your concern, the water supply needs to be turned off first. We recommend that you replace the water filter every six months. The refrigerator's water filter light will let you know when those six months are up and should be reset after changing the filter. Here is a link to help you change the water filter. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00060149/ Should you need more assistance, please feel free to get back to us via the following options: 1. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. While it is not necessary to turn off the water supply to the refrigerator in order to replace the filter, doing so may help alleviate the pressure if you find it difficult to remove the old filter or install the new one. A pink filter light indicates that you're about a month away from needing to change the filter. The light usually turns pink at about 5 months, and red at about 6 months. Thanks for the questions! Ms. Samsung
