“I see lots of reviews mentioning a rear facing camera. Can this work as a backup camera to help a new driver with parking etc or is the angle going to be too high for that? It's for a 2012 VW Jetta if that matters”

The screen is so tiny, I would absolutely not recommend using this as a backup camera. Also, for what it's worth, many states (definitely my home state) will not allow use of any camera during driving tests. My own child failed her drivers' test simply because she forgot to turn off the built-in camera and there was no way to prove she wasn't looking at it. When she retested, she had the camera turned off and was able to parallel park perfectly using only the mirrors. Now that she uses the camera, she is always more than a foot away from the curb but an inch away from the car behind her.
