If you’re talking about the chime device that works in conjunction with the ring doorbell 2 to let the doorbell chime be heard in other areas of your house, you do not need a base station of any kind for the chime to work. It connects to your WiFi just like the doorbell does. Don’t know where you heard that but it is bad information.

I actually asked those questions at several different retailers, and Best Buy was the only one that gave me the answer. The reason I asked was because I already had a security system in my home, already owned the equipment, and I wanted to know if it was compatible with the Ring system. I also asked if I could purchase only the base station, and each retailer told me that you have to purchase the base station with the keypad. The package included more than what I needed but I was able to put it all to good use. Definitely worth it--the system is working like a charm.
