Hi TheDoc. Good question. No, it is not required to purchase a second battery. The Ring Spotlight Cam Battery has the ability to hold two Ring battery packs for long-lasting battery life, but only one is required. Its suggested just incase one battery fails to hold charge, you would have a second already. In my experience I recently purchased the spot light camera, as is, and got a solar panel later to maintain the charge. Instead of climbinb up to recharge every 2 months. Everythings been running fine since.
