the doorbell rings on its own, so a 'chime' is not necessary, but I do also have a chime and it makes it easier when you are in a different part of the home. your iPhone also transmits the rings when the doorbell is pushed. I do not know the difference between different models of the Ring device, but the associates in the store are most helpful and yes the Ring component comes with a rechargeable battery.

Either way if you have no existing wired chime you will need a Ring chime to make noise in the house. If you have a wired doorbell in place with a working chime go with either the Remo+ doorbell or Skybell. Both give you free cloud storage which Ring charges you for monthly. They're also much better looking and smaller overall. There are others as well but I've used all of the above mentioned.
