the antenna will bleed into the cable signal- the device is designed to spli one signal to 2 separate devices not the other way around

If I'm understanding your description, you're looking to converge 2 sources (cable and antenna) into a single input on the TV. The problem with this is you have no way of telling the TV which source to process since they'll both be coming in over the coax cable. It sounds like you need an active switch to change the sources.
