• This cable will go from your tv to your receiver/external speaker sorce. Say for instance you have a smart tv with wifi and your streaming Netflix, the sound will only be heard out of your tv speakers. You'll need this cable to go from your tv to your external device to enjoy surround sound

• The way it was explained to me the optical cable does what on newer components the HDMI will do. It provides audio feed from the component to the receiver or TV

• Well i will tray to make it simple to you. This cable uses to pass audio from dvice to another and able to work with multi channel audio like Dolby Digital. Depending on your gear if you want to get the audio out to a sound bar from your tv so this is your option but if you have a blu ray then you better use HDMI cable for both audio and video. I hope i could explain that right.

• Generally, they're for hooking up your TV to a receiver (speakers). Look for an optical connection on both and connect the cables.
