“Now that this is connected from my Pioneer Receiver to Sony TV, I can't use my cable (Comcast) or TV remote to change the volume and/or mute, only the receiver remote. Is there some way to fix this so I can use the Comcast remote for volume?”

You have to pair your comcast remote to your pioneer receive since the audio is now played thru your receiver

My receiver did not have a ARC HDMI input which would have let me control volume with the TV remote. Had to go to an optical cable which is not a 2-way cable. Only option I see is purchase a new receiver with ARC HDMI which is a 2-way can so your TV remote will work the volume.
