“I've read the manual and it states for a a/v receiver without a sub out that u can hookup to the r & l inputs using the receivers r&l preouts. Does the unit then only send low level frequencies to the receiver unit?”

Who knows? I think it probably sends the full signal but your subwoofer crossover should take care of that on the sub end. Set your crossover to 80Hz on the subwoofer and it will ignore anything above that no matter what signal it receives. (As it should). Set all of your speakers on your receiver to Small and the receirver crossover setting to 80Hz as well no matter how big you think they are unless their huge and have really big subwoofers. This will ease the load on your receiver to send frequencies above 80 Hz to your speakers and anything below goes to your subwoofers.
