Device will play without being plugged in. If you want to play at the max settings on an AAA you could get as low as 45-85 minutes of charge on battery. There are adjustments that can be made to extend that battery life. Plugging in allows you to play on max without worrying about the battery.

Sometimes you don't need all 25 watts (while on battery) if you are playing an indie game. Saves a lot of battery by managing the device this way.
