You cannot record directly to a roku, you can if you’re looking for a cheaper option use a roku to subscribe to a service like sling, hulu or possibly YouTube red (I think is the name) those services offer cable type packages and usually offer a cloud based dvr option.

Roku itself doesn't have a DVR or recording option, the Roku player just streams content from the internet. Some of our channel partners offer a Cloud based DVR like Hulu or YouTubeTV.
