Hello Valerie. You do not need a cable service but you are able to subscribe to some things such a sling tv or hulu so you are able to watch some content on here. There are some apps you are able to download so you can watch movies free but there will be advertisements. It comes with the batteries and you will not need anything else to start using this. It comes with a HDMI cable and the power cable that you might have to plug into an outlet unless your tv has a USB port.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.All of the roku apps are subscription based so no actual cable service is needed. All you need is an hdtv with an hdmi input which all hdtvs have. Also yes I believe the batteries are included for the remote.
