There are many reasons to get a streaming device like the Roku. However, as is the case with most entertainment devices, the Roku isn't really necessary, but it is very convenient. One reason is simply to get your content on your big screen TV, wherever it may be in your home, instead of your tablet or computer. Another reason is user experience. Example: If I subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Video, and Hulu, I can search on the Roku home screen for a movie or show and the Roku will instantly bring up the show from whatever subscription service it is on. One more reason is TV compatibility. Lots of people still have TVs that don't connect to the internet, a Roku will get Netflix or Amazon Video onto your TV.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime, and I can watch these through my computer, however we find it easier to use the Roku/Amazon sticks for watching movies. I agree most of the premium stations must be paid for (one way or another) but since we do not subscribe to cable or satellite this is our only form of entertainment.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If it's just you and you want to watch on your tv or ipad or whatever, fine. But if you have people over and you want to watch from a tv screen and not all huddle around a computer, then you need to get this if you don't have a smart tv or don't know how to hook up your device to stream through your tv--which is cumbersome. This is easy peasy.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I purchased this in addition to cable service. I do not have HBO, SHOWTIME,etc
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Well, I think you answered your question :) if you do not need to use any streaming service or you have a smart TV (or ChromeCast, Apple TV, Fire TV, etc.) you may not need this, but the Roku Channel store has some free services you may like https://channelstore.roku.com/browse
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The purpose is for another TV you don't have a cable box on, or travel like in a hotel. Or if you have a limited use smart tv.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I use it to watch them on the big TV in the living room, instead of a tablet.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Sounds like you don't...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I had two Roku devices. If you have ever dealt with their customer service you would never ask why. Their lousy customer service is second only to AT&T. The first device worked for a year, the when it began to have problems, it was everyone else's fault, that is the cable company, the tv manufacturer, etc. Replaced the device and the second one lasted 6 months of great service and then began to have problems. Once again it was everyone else's fault, no fault of the device and a continual runaround from the customer service department. NO resolution to the problems of a device well within the warranty life. It went into the trash and was replaced by the Amazon Fire Stick at under half the price.
I would recommend:
