The Roku itself does not need a subscription. Some of the Channels you can add do require a subscription but many do not. i.e. Youtube, Plex, PBS, Revisio3 (this list goes on and on) do not; but channels like USA Now, ABC, CBS etc require a cable providers login and there are also channels MLB.tv, NBA and most sport channel have premium content requiring subscriptions or in channel payments. Have a look at this blog posting. https://blog.roku.com/blog/2014/09/29/which-roku-channels-are-free/
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Roku devices don't require any monthly fees to work. All you need is an internet connection, plus any paid services you want. There are free channels on the Roku devices.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is no monthly service fee to use Roku. Certain channels require a subscription fee, such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Now, and others. This is no different than the subscription fee required for access on PCs, laptops, and other devices. However, there are numerous free channels for weather, news, and eclectic interests. YouTube is free as well. The upside is that Roku pools all of these through a single source so that selection is tidy and easy.
