• The streaming stick connects to the HDMI connection on your TV. Your computer can stream video without Roku. If you are casting the video from your Laptop to TV, it would need to remain on.

• You plug it into your tv not your computer, so you don't need your computer on while watching tv and yes the remote works great.

• The Roku Stick 2016 connects to your WiFi network so you don't need anything other than your WiFi router on to watch. The Roku remote only changes Roku Channels and settings, you need the TV remote to adjust volume and change the TV input to and from the HDMI port it's connected to.

• Hi dan, you don't need your laptop to use this device, you just have to plug it to your tv and yes you can use your remote to change the channels.
