No need for a smart TV. As long as your TV has an HDMI port, it's good to go. You would need to use the Roku remote for all the Roku channels. The Roku remote usually can also turn your TV on/off, change the volume, and mute. For any other TV functions like changing TV channels or switching to your DVD player etc., you'd need to use your TV remote.

You will no longer need the Apple TV box as we off the Apple TV app and also have compatibility with Apple HomeKit. The remote that comes with the Roku device can turn on and off your tv as well as change the volume, you will only need the tv remote to change inputs if you have other devices connected to the TV.
