Unfortunately yes, online multiplayer games do require a subscription. However unlike Microsoft or Sony, Nintendo’s online service is only $20 per year. Plus it includes NES and SNES emulator apps with tons of free games each that they are constantly adding to! So at that low of a price point even if you don’t use it all that often it doesn’t end up feeling like a total waste. :)
