Yes, if your recirculating air. You can do it without taking down the microwave.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It's not "necessary", but it will definitely help with food smells. You are able to install it once it's mounted though. This is how you are able to change the filter regularly. You just need to remove the three small screws along the top and the filter grate slides to the left and out.
