Mine actually says "digital audio output". Some TVs might say "optical" and others might say "Toslink" They are the same thing. The port on the TV has a 5-sided shape that coincides with the shape on the end of the optical cable that almost looks like a small version of a home plate, so it requires being plugged in at the correct angle the same way an hdmi cable does. It has a cover that you simply push the cord through. The cover is like a protective hinged "door" that covers the optical port on your TV. Think of it like an opening on your home's front door that pets go in and out of. The way the cover moves on that pet door is the same way the cover moves on your optical port. Hope that helps...
