Standard opening is 36" and OTR microwaves are designed to fit without a filler kit. Installers would not typically have anything to fill gaps as the gap should not be more than 1/8 inch! This much space is required to insert microwave in place. A 36" microwave won't fit into a 36" opening. If your opening is larger than 36", you might consider a piece of wood trim for unacceptable gaps!
