We just had a service call about this very thing and 2 other issues. You can turn off the ice maker, but you have to do it from inside the refrigerator on the right control panel. To have to think ahead and do that every time you open the freezer would just be silly. We tried to get the service person to admit it was a design flaw, but he insisted it was "normal". Sorry, that is not normal
