“Is it true that I cannot use my 2012 MacBook Pro laptop to connect via HDMI to this TV? When I do, I get the sound only, and the background mountain and sea of Apple's current operating system, but nothing from the laptop screen gets transmitted.”

It sounds like your MacBook is using the Samsung as an external display or extended desktop. Go into your MacBook System Preferences + Displays, enable Display Mirroring Options and what you see on your laptop will also show up on the Samsung.
