• Hi Mike, No, the water filter on this Samsung refrigerator model can be bypassed. It is recommended to use a genuine Samsung water filter for the ice maker to ensure impurities are filtered. For first time use of the ice maker, let the machine create ice for 1 - 2 days then discard the first 2 buckets. Leo
