A smart TV allows you to connect to the internet to do searches, retrieve articles, etc. - consider it a "big tablet!" That being said, unless you've purchased a keyboard you'll need to input your search words or websites letter-by-letter via the TV's remote, which can be a cumbersome process for some. Along with the searches, some of these TVs allow direct access to popular media sites, news sites, gaming sites, etc., and/or services you subscribe to. While many of the new smart TVs have wireless capability, I prefer a good 'ole hard-wire connection.

It lets you watch things like Amazon Video or Netflix on the TV. I use a Smart TV, combined with an over-the-air (OTA) HDTV antennae to watch local channels and movies without paying for a full cable TV plan.
