• You can program the DirecTV remote to turn the TV off and to control the volume. I am not aware of any other functions you can use although I just got the TV 24 hours ago.

• Yes it will, but if you want to use the "smart" part of the TV (Amazon, Hulu, Netflix) you have to use the television's remote.
