You just need an aux cable. It is like plugging in headphones. There is a setting on the tv for speakers. If you choose external, you can't control volume with the remote unless the speakers have a remote. I plugged in my Bose computer speakers that don't have a tense and I if to go up to the speakers to change volume. Keep that in mind.

This might be obvious, but keep in mind that if you have other devices (i.e. Blu-ray, game console, cable box, etc), and a receiver that accepts multiple inputs, then it would be ideal to connect them to the receiver rather than the TV. In this scenario you would still need an optical audio cable if you want to hear sound from a TV channel.
