It could very well be that the stove top is 110. It should be very easy to check your wires with a multimeter. If you aren't comfortable, ask a friend. There are a lot of people who are comfortable doing this. You need 2 hot wires (usually black and red) going to the range along with a Neutral wire (usually) white. You should also have a ground (green).

It's unlikely that the cooktop would function properly with only a 110V connection, but more importantly, it's extremely important that the range is connected to an appropriately powered, 240V/60 Hz/40-amp circuit in order for it to operate properly and safely. I would suggest having a qualified electrician check the circuit to ensure it's up to code.
