Yes. I have mine mounted over the fireplace and it is a wood-burning and a gas fireplace. As long as there is no heat or smoke going above it, I think it will be okay.

Yes, we installed ours above our fireplace, however please note we dont ever use the fireplace but I dont see that there would be an issue.
