“Hi, I noticed that there are white spots when I turn off the lights when the background is black. It is hard not to notice it especially if it is in wide screen and the edges are black. The white area is distracting. Did I get a defective unit?”

Possibly. Try adjusting the picture quality settings, looks like you have it set to standard (factory setting) which is a brighter picture. "Movie" setting is better for a dark room. If that doesn't work then maybe exchange it.
