What is the difference between the $1800 unit? null

Primarily it's not "function" but style/finish that you will be paying the difference for. The DV9900 has a capacitive touch interface rather than the buttons the DV9600 has. There's more "chrome" to the finish. I've walked through the spec sheets and outside of the slightly fancier styling and the capacitive touch interface, there's really not much else.

One has a moisture sensor, the other does not.

A few more drying cycles, one more temperature setting and of course gas or electric.
