Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The way it was explained to me...yes it can open without squeezing the latch. But that latch is designed to assist in breaking the seal. You risk breaking the rubber seal by opening it without the latch. I see where the confusion is because I thought the same thing. Latch doesn't lock it or anything, if you watch when you squeeze it, all it does it push that plastic piece forward to help break the seal. Hope this helps.
