It is freestanding. There is no lip on the edge like a traditional slide-in. If you get the normal stainless finish, you can go to a well known site that starts with A and search for "Stainless Steel Stove to Counter Gap Cover" - it's a perfect match and covers the side gap cleanly. Looks like it came with the range.
