We're here to help with all your questions, Nick! To use the Smart Control feature on this model, you will need to first press the Smart Control button on the range itself. Because of this, preheating using the app is not an available feature. The app can only adjust settings or turn the oven off. For the griddle, I have it listed as being made of cast iron. ^Jecca
