You don't have to be close to the case. You can leave the case in your car and do your business, however I recommend to have the case close by for that extra charge

No the earbuds do not need to be close to the case to work. Yes you can leave the case and still be connected to your phone.

I've had my buds about 25 to 30 feet away from both the case and the phone (in a different room without a clear line of sight) and still maintained a good connection. I never attempted going any further than that.
