If you buy and activate now that means you'll be signing up with a carrier like Verizon, Sprint, etc. Which is fine if you want to use one of those. I always buy unlocked and activate later because I use a carrier that is not well known but a lot cheaper.

I see no advantage, I see a disadvantage since it states your activating a new line of service.
