Activate now will set up your phone during the purchase of the product. Activate later you will receive the phone on activated and will have to activate it on your cell phone service yourself. I chose the second option because I needed my old phone to be working until I got the new one. It is a pretty simple process to call the Carrier and they take a couple numbers from you and switch over your phone. Keep in mind this does have an esim card as well as a SIM card slot. If you get a bad technician this can cause a lag in your phone being set up.
