Are you getting an unlocked phone? I can only answer for unlocked. That is what I bought. I pulled the sim card out of my old Verizon Motorola Maxx, plugged it into my new S8 and that was it. I didn't change the service provider and no activation fee was involved. Insert sim card and Go. My old Motorola is now a very nice machine that works just great on Wi-Fi, just can't call or text with it.
