“The Galaxy S6 has antenna so poor I can only make calls only when very near a tower. Is the S9 any better in this regard? If I upgrade to S9 I want to be sure it will have a better range for cellular as compared to S6. Will appreciate learning about calls”

The S 9 has had very good reception. I have used it in rural areas and had no problems.
