Unlocked devices are compatible with most major wireless carriers in the U.S. whereas a device that is locked will only be compatible with one carrier. So if this device was locked with verizon, you would not be able to take it to t-mobile and get service in it. An unlocked phone has no ties to a specific phone carrier and can be brought to get service from any carrier. Since this device is unlocked, you are free to purchase it without needing to get a specific carrier for it.
