• It doesn't have to be connected to a service plan. If you don't connect it with a service plan it connects to your phone via blutooth or Wi-Fi, letting you text and make calls etc. from the watch but on your actual phone. So it has to always be in range of your mobile phone.

The Gear S2 you are viewing is the Bluetooth only model which does not require service and will need to be paired with your phone to receive messages to the watch itself. I hope this was informative.
