• Yes; most wifi speakers don't have batteries as they use a lot more power versus bluetooth that lacks range and sound quality. I believe there is only one product on the market with both wifi and on-board battery source.

• The R1 has to be plugged in to a power source to work. There is no chargeable battery on this speaker. It is not portable.
