“How do you get this unit to play a USB device (i.e. iPad or USB flash drive?) Does it need to have the Ethernet cable connected in order to do that? I could not "change device" and it just keeps asking to close the door with the DVD in it.”

Make sure your flash drive is formatted for NTSF. The Samsung won't recognize FAT32 or other formats.
