I just bought a Sony x850d HDR 65 inch tv. I load up a disk and the first message I get is that I don't have an HDR tv. What gives? null

There should be an option on your TV to enable HDR.
You have to look it up.
You don't have to buy anything. Those boxes recommended here by someone are just for UI, nothing to do with HDR.

Jeff I don't know if I answered this already but you need to purchase a separate evolution kit for your 4K player. The evolution it is available at Best Buy by special order either online or at the store. The kit at full price is $399.99 but you do need the kit to see true 4K quality.
