“I need to free up space on my iphone. If I delete my pictures from my phone and put them on this drive, will I still be able to view the pics on my phone (and post them to instagram), if the drive is plugged in to the phone?”

Yes. I do this with all my photos. I have the 128 gig iPhone and the top tier iCloud account through apple and it's still not enough for all the pictures I have. So buying this cleared up a lot of storage and when ever I want to go back to them I jus plug it back into my iPhone and there they are. Very easy and simple to use.
