The title for this item erroneously says "Hardware Encryption" but it should be "Software Encryption". So, yes, there is some software that is present on the USB flash drive that works in conjunction with mostly windows computers and is dependent upon your computer to function.

Correct, they are plug n play. You could alternatively place them in a lock box, safe, etc.
