Depends on how your house was built. You will need a stud finder to determine 16 inch or 24 inch centers and that will determine how close you want to put your mount. The biggest thing is take measurements of the height and length of your tv. Make a drawing of the area you want to place the tv along with the mount which will help you visualize its placement. Always measure twice to be sure. My two cents.
