That is because the phone sees the SmartMic as a headset microphone, and there are no headphones in the connection. For what you are trying to do, you would be much better off with a product like our LavMicro+DC, which is a lavalier microphone with level control and 3.5mm headphone output that connects to the phone via Lightning for your iPhone, or USB-C and USB-A for other devices and computers.
